3 new charts this year:

  • American Salute (Included in the "pre-program" concert)
  • Salute to the Armed Forces (included in the "formal program" portion) Medley of all 6 service branches' songs (includes Space Force). We will no longer play the old Marches of the Armed Forces that you might still have from previous years.
  • Sound Off (standalone Sousa march, will be played in the Sousa-thon portion)

09:15 - downbeat for "pre-program" concert

  • NOTE: this list is in play order
  • 76 Trombones - All: don't get shrill; keep it dark. Tbn: Lean into gliss. Tubas DON'T listen; follow Jeff!
  • American Patrol - At end, speed up STRINGENDO, should NOT be subito; Watch Jeff!
  • American Salute - Err toward "detached"; DRAGGING at 129 (4/4); do NOT listen for the call & response, or you'll be late. Watch Jeff!
  • Aviator (Fulton March) - Detached, regimental, stately i.e. not too fast. "Note-rest-note"; short first note, punch the second note.
  • Bugler's Holiday - "gesture of syncopation" Do not hesitate (i.e. try to syncopate) the downbeat 3rd meas of 9. All of 9 to 10: "don't follow a pattern that doesn't exist" read what's written - no way you're gonna get it by guessing.
  • Eagle Squadron - 1st "ending" before 109, keep on going into 109, DS to 76, end on "Last" ending right before 109
  • National Emblem (this will be the last chart before the formal program kicks off) - NO STINGER. Get off the half note. Tbn&Euph, B section "Oh the monkey wrapped his tail . . "and two and one" - bring it out, marcato short & long

10:00 - music in support of the "formal program"

  • NOTE: this set is in (highly likely) play order
  • To the Colors (bugler only, no band)
  • Star Spangled Banner - pickup to C is straight eighths
  • Salute to the Armed Forces - All: TOO LOUD! Tpts: pickup to 51 & 59 ("From the Halls") is straight eighths
  • Battle Hymn of the Republic - pickup to 10 will be subdivided - eighth gets the beat - then abrupt return to original temp @2 before 11.
  • America the Beautiful - All: delete measure 1; piece starts with a bass drum roll in measure 2. Tranquil section is faster tempo than fanfare. Jeff slows down pickup to last 2 measures.
  • God Bless America - All: @24, repeat back to 21, end on FIRST beat of 24 by playing a note of an Eb Major chord.

11:00 - "Sousa-thon" for the children's parade - the band DOES NOT MARCH! We remain seated under the tent.

Percussionists: please play a cadence between charts to avoid dead air. Recruit a page turner to flip you to the next chart.

  • Stars & Stripes Forever is the kick-off march. The kids are lined up, Jeff provides the tempo to the whistler to blow the sound-off, and Jeff brings the band in.
  • Sound Off

The following will be played in alphabetical/book order. We may skip some depending on crowd size, heat, exhaustion.

  • Beau Ideal
  • Black Horse Troop
  • El Capitan
  • Fairest of the Fair
  • Hands Across the Sea
  • High School Cadets
  • Invincible Eagle
  • King Cotton
  • Liberty Bell
  • Manhattan Beach
  • Nobles of the Mystic Shrine

2024 Set List & Rehearsal Notes

Important: I need accurate headcount and you need music passwords. If you haven't rsvp'd, please contact Tadashi.

Note: The music packets include charts that we are NOT playing this year. Refer to the Set Lists (above) for the pieces to practice. Ignore the remainder.

Another note: We do not assign parts, preferring to leave that decision to you and your section mates.

Please print your own charts. I'll have a limited # of loaner hardcopy packets available at rehearsal and performance. Return borrowed packets on the 4th at event's end.
